OLD NEWS RECORDS IS BACK.... SORT OF

I've had a few people from out of state e-mail me asking about the availability of the new Tamerlane album, but wasn't quite sure how to go about getting it to people.

I (hopefully) solved that problem today when I built a Big Cartel store for Old News Records. It's got the Tamerlane full-length, the demo, the Up River EP and both Cherem releases.

I don't plan on putting out hard copies of any more albums, but since I don't have a band anymore, I don't have a merch table at shows. And since there aren't really any shows anyway, that's another problem.

But if you wanted to get any of these, and never had the means to get to a show, I tried to make it as easy as possible. So head on over and check it out.

SUB FOR SANTA = SUCCESS!

Thanks to everyone that came out to the shows this weekend. I had tons of fun both nights and hopefully everyone else did, too. Kind of bummed Sleeping Giant had to cancel, but we had a good time without them.

If anyone was able to get any photos or video of either night, let us know where we can see them. My video camera is out of commission, and I haven't been able to get it fixed yet so I couldn't get anything.

Also, if you picked up a copy of the new Tamerlane record, let us know your thoughts. We worked hard on it and we're curious to see what people think.

Thanks.

Now someone get on it and start booking some good shows!

CLOUDS UNFOLD

I wanted to make sure you guys knew about this because it's been a long time in the making. We started it two years ago and have been asked about it at least once a month (often times more) since.

We dropped it off at the pressing plant last week and barring some issue that is completely out of our control, we should have this and some new shirts at the show this Saturday. This will probably be the last time you see Tamerlane (for a while, perhaps ever) so make sure you come out to pick one up. It's good stuff.

YOUTUBE - A HARDCORE MUSIC BLOCKBUSTER

Only this one isn't on the verge of bankruptcy.

Lots of old show videos and news clips about Salt Lake Hardcore have been surfacing on YouTube lately and we're pretty stoked on that.

If you've got old videos and few hours to kill, sign up for a YouTube account and throw them up there. We'd all love to see them and I'm sure a lot of other people would, too. So get after it and drop us a line letting us know where we can find them.

Meanwhile here's an Aftermath of a Trainwreck video from 2004.

"THEN HE TURNED AROUND AND DECKED VANILLA ICE IN THE FACE"

Reports on the Vanilla Ice comeback debacle at the Tower Theatre in the late 90s have surfaced on the net. Oh, "straight edge gang members."

YouTube user XSheerXTerrorX - wonder what Bearer would say about those Xs - has posted a ton of other great Salt Lake Hardcore content which we'll be featuring in the near future.

In related news, Vanilla Ice is now a Juggalo. Who'd of seen that comin'?

SALT LAKE HARDCORE 101: THE STENCH

Renowned for their surfer looks and unique melodic hardcore-rock sound, The Stench kept the city's scene alive through the late '80s.

The band released six albums -- 86's Zigamewa (Raunch), 87's Crazy Moon (Running Records/Cargo), 88's Saltair (Running Records/Cargo), 89's Old Style (Mysophobic), and 90's S/T (Leone Trust) and Four Before (Flatline Records) -- before disbanding in 1993.

Songwriter Terrance D.H. honed his singing skills with The Stench before moving on to front Bad Yodelers, Magstatic, Daisy Grey and various solo endeavors. He continues to release solo music and leads local rock band Danger Hailstorm, while enjoying a successful career as a music engineer at Salt Lake's Counterpoint Studios. His resume includes work with artists ranging from Air Supply to Sum 41.

The Stench reunited in 2007 alongside fellow deceased Salt Lake acts Iceburn and Clear for SLUG Magazine's 18th Anniversary. Slug released a DVD about the reunion show titled, Making A Scene, that can be purchased at numerous local spots and online here.

SALT LAKE HARDCORE 101: BAD YODELERS

Salt Lake City is now well known for adding experimental heaviness and dark melody to traditional hardcore punk. This began with one band: Bad Yodelers.

The earliest incarnation of the Bad Yodelers played its first show in 1983 in the basement of Jon Shuman's house (bassist of Massacre Guys) alongside the earliest incarnation of another classic Salt Lake act, Victims Willing.

In the same year, the band recorded its first demo with its second singer, Brian Szugye. The demo featured a cover of Dr. Seuss' "One Fish Two Fish" and landed the Yodelers a now-historic opening spot with Discharge at the Salt Lake Indian Center. Szugye left the band before the show though and his replacement, Norman Frazier, dove off the stage during the band's final song, knocking his front teeth out on impact.

Road manager Kevin Golding took over vocals after the show. [On a totally tangential but interesting note, Kevin Golding was a California native who moved to Provo with his family in the early 80s, played with Bad Yodelers and Napier's Bones, and booked a number of shows at the Salt Lake Indian Center for acts including Black Flag, Battalion of Saints, Husker Du, and Minor Threat! These are shows of legend. Husker Du showed up late, after most of the crowd had left thinking the show would be canceled. They played to a handful of people, were psyched to receive $20 and used it to buy beer and pizza for all. Battalion of Saints played to an equally small crowd and threatened to beat Kevin up for it. Back to the Yodelers.]

1984 saw the release of an eleven-song cassette. The record was locally-lauded and won over a large fan base along the Wasatch Front. The Yodelers also set off on their first tour of the Rocky Mountain West. Golding left the band later in the year and Karl Alvarez of Massacre Guys became the band's 5th frontman.

Alvarez's arrival marked a shift in the band's style from its punk roots to a more experimental, metallic sound. The band recorded nine songs with Alvarez and toured extensively before he left the band to join melodic punk legends, the Descendents/ALL. A long-time friend Dow Patten fronted the band briefly before setting sail for San Francisco. Laura Jones, who went on to front Salt Lake act Commonplace, played two shows with the band before splitting due to creative differences.

In 1986, the band acquired its 8th-and-final vocalist, Terrance DH of The Stench. The band signed with European label Semaphore Records soon after and released the album, I Wonder, in 1989. I Wonder introduced the world to the polished version of the Yodelers' new hardcore/punk/thrash metal amalgam. They toured Europe the same year.

1991's Window saw the band moving toward a more refined post-hardcore/rock sound that would carry into 1993's South and the subsequent formation of the members' next project/re-naming, Season of the Spring. SOTS released a powerfully emotional, self-titled a record in 1993, but sadly disbanded shortly after.

Terrance DH shifted his focus to the band Magstatic, and now plays with Danger Hailstorm. Guitarist Mark Allen became an assistant professor of psychology at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Karl Alvarez continues to play with the Descendents and All. He's also played with acts the likes of Gogol Bordello, The Last, Underminer, The Vultures, The Real McKenzies, and The Lemonheads.

GOOD NEWS AND, WELL, OTHER NEWS

GCA is 2 years old. Awesome!

But the site is starting to feel its age. Well, truth is, we are....

As many of you know, I relocated to NYC, got a "real" job, and just got engaged. Trevor's killing it at City Weekly, the Salt Lake City Film Festival and probably still sleeping way too little. And Sias has become a family man.

Yes, we're getting old. And sadly, we don't have the virility to keep this thing running at the high speeds it once did.

So...

GCA isn't shutting down. Phew, right? But we're pulling back on the reigns. We'll continue to post show info and flyers, but our regular news feed will be no more. In its place will live in-depth features on Salt Lake Hardcore bands and history. Think of it more like a fine, leather-bound encyclopedia than a daily newspaper.

If you'd like to help create such features, hit us up at grudgecityhc@gmail.com. [See our 101 section for reference.]

WHAT HAPPENED TO MYSPACE?

I looked through the bulletins on GCA's MySpace account for the first time in months today. Is it just me or has it become every respectable father's worst nightmares: date-rape metalcore bros posting about their "gigs" and teenage girls  with no clothes on posting about how excited they are to attend said bros' "gigs."

When I have kids, I'm cancelling the internet.

PORN SITES TO RECEIVE .XXX DOMAIN... WHERE'S GCA'S???

Mashable -- ICANN, the organization that oversees domain names and registrations for the Internet, plans to approve the .xxx top-level domain (TLD) for adult websites.

According to multiple reports, ICANN officials told people at a public meeting in Brussels that it intends to allow adult businesses to register .xxx domains, which have been the subject of controversy for several years. An ICANN attorney said that due diligence and contract negotiations must still be carried out; if those are successful, Internet porn could have its own distinct TLD.

WANT TO PLAY DRUMS FOR THE CURRENT?

Have you ever dreamed of living the life of a rock star? Traveling the world in style and playing for screaming fans every night lapping it up in luxury and debauchery only Motley Crue could rival?

Well, The Current is a hardcore band so there will be none of that. There will however be long drives in a hot van with the reward of playing for kids that genuinely appreciate what you're doing every night.

They're looking for a fill-in drummer to accompany them on a northwest tour this summer (July 21 to August 1 with Abandon), so if you're interested in doing so, tell them.

Isaiah is the bass player and the man you'll need to talk to. Get in touch with him at: 801 897 3508

The Current is also heading into the studio next weekend, so for those of you that haven't had the pleasure of seeing/hearing them yet, the wait is almost over.

STREAM REVIVER'S NEW EP RIGHT HERE ON GCA... NOW!

Reviver is releasing their new EP Potential Wasteland this week through State of Mind Recordings. You'll be able to pick it up Friday at their Kilby Court release show, but we'll be streaming the record all week long here at GCA.

Listen above and enjoy some color commentary on each track from Reviver frontman Matt Mascarenas below. Hit play and read on:

IX

One of the many members that used to be in our band called this the ‘Marilyn Manson riff.’ Now every time we play it, the music video for “The Dope Show” where Marilyn Manson is wearing the boob suit pops in my head. Great.

LEGACY

This is actually the third song we ever wrote. Like many of the other songs on ‘Versificator,’ the guitar riffs in Legacy were meant for a slow, down-tempo side project, Fortunes. We sped it up, but we were never happy with it. When we were deciding which songs to put on ‘Versificator,’ we had to choose between Legacy and Anthem; Anthem won. We ended up rewriting Legacy and now we’re happy with it.

NEW LOWS

This was the last song to be written for this record. We were home for a couple weeks in February of 2009 and Jeff and I were unemployed and Brian didn’t work until 10:00 am, so the three of us would go jam from 8-9:30am. The early morning jams didn’t last long, but we were able to knock out the basic outline for this song. I had a hard time finalizing lyrics that I was happy with. I already knew what I was going to write about, but I just couldn’t get it out. After months of getting nowhere with it, I decided to open my notebook and write whatever came to mind and just go with it. “I give up. I’ve been trying for several months now to get it all into words.” Looking back on it now, I probably over thought it, but I’m happy with the way it turned out.

Get the scoop on the rest of the tracks after the jump...
